A DECLARATION OF BEAUTY AND POWER

The Period Statement Earrings boldly embody the menstrual cycle in all its glory. Translating extensive research on the physical and cultural aspects of menstruation, I crafted a striking line of earrings. Inspired by the different phases and emotions of the menstrual  cycle, these earrings serve as wearable expressions of power, sparking conversations that empower us to redefine the narrative surrounding menstruation.

in a nutshell

THE PROCESS

THINKING THROUGH MAKING

Driven by frustration with the societal narrative that depicts the menstrual cycle as a disadvantage and ads that shy away from its true nature, I embarked on a journey of research and creation. Through books, podcasts, films, and cultural references, I delved into the topic, uncovering the work of talented individuals and organisations dedicated to menstruation and period poverty.

Initially, I designed two sets of earrings that I wore during my own menstrual cycle. They brought a sense of joy to what could be a painful experience and acted as conversation starters. This process enabled me to confidently articulate and embrace the different aspects my body went through each month. Inspired to visually represent the various phases of the menstrual cycle in a fun and empowering way, I expanded the line to include six unique designs.

Small triangles made of a mix of black and white polymer clay laid on a light blue cutting mat.

THE OUTCOME

CREATIVE OVERFLOW!

The Period Statement Earrings have six distinct designs, all meticulously handmade by me. I also crafted the packaging for the earrings. Additionally, as a byproduct of this creative process, I developed The Nartik, a vulva-shaped purse initially designed as packaging for the earrings.

Throughout this journey, I engaged in meaningful conversations, listening to diverse voices and learning from a range of experiences.
